Pocket guide for travelers coming to Poland?
LANGUAGE:
the official language is Polish but in all big cities you can easily communicate in English (hotels, restaurants, pubs, offices, cinemas, theatres, museums, shops) The most common languages in Poland beside Polish are English and German.
FOOD:
we recommend you to try delicious Polish cuisine. Nevertheless you can find restaurants that serve dishes from every place of the world. We are sure that you will find something in your taste (Italian, French, Chinese, Spanish, Turkish, Mexico, Arabic, Japanese, Vegetarian restaurants and more) In restaurants, pubs and bars prices are reasonable (e.g. about 10-12 EUR/GBP dinner per person)
MONEY:
the legal tender in Poland is the Polish złoty (zł, international abbreviation: PLN). The złoty divides into 100 grosze. Poland is expected to adopt the Euro (€) sometime after 2010, but those plans are still tentative.
CREDIT CARD:
sometimes it is necessary to inform your bank that you will use your credit card abroad also check your card limits. Credit cards are accepted in most places.
EXCHANGE:
the best rate of exchange you can get in the city centre. We do not recommend exchanging money on the airport because there the rate of exchange is not good. Also if you like to exchange a big amount of money it is possible to negotiate a better rate of exchange in the exchange office.
SHOPS:
Shops are opened from Monday to Friday 10:00-6:00, on Saturday 10:00-2:00. Big shopping malls and markets (e.g. Tesco, Carrefour) are opened everyday 10:00-9:00. Prices are mainly lower than in UK or Ireland.
SHOPPING:
if you like to spend your free time on shopping you can find a vast range of shops (the same brands like in UK or Ireland, e.g. Adidas, Nike, Lee, Wrangler, Levis, Reebok, Zara, Reserved, Bershka, Blanck&Johnes, Douglas, Sephora and more) Prices are mainly lower than in UK or Ireland.
TRANSPORT:
city transport is quite cheap (buses or trams); you can buy a ticket in newsagents. Transport between cities (buses, trains) is also at reasonable prices.
HOLIDAYS:
please note that Catholic religious holidays are widely observed in Poland. Stores, malls, and restaurants are likely to be closed or have very limited business hours on Easter, All Saints Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas.
• Easter, a moveable feast that happens in March or April.
• Constitution Day falls on May 3rd.
